Today was the grand opening of new art for Ventura’s bike racks and bus shelters. The event was held at California Street Park on the corner of Santa Clara Street.

The event included live music by the Jazz Consultants, refreshments and brief remarks by Mayor Mike Tracy; Parks, Recreation & Community Partnerships Manager, Denise Sindelar; and Public Art Commission Chair, Michael Faulconer. Interpretive panels of the new public artworks were on display and contributing artists were acknowledged and awarded along with many of the individuals who helped bring this endeavor to fruition.

The City of Ventura’s nationally-recognized public art program of transit artworks now consists of 19 bus shelter murals and 7 bike rack sculptures installed through the city — and anchored by the “Bus-Home” bus transfer center created by Dennis Oppenheim — to fulfill the Public Art Program goal of weaving art into they everyday life of our residents and visitors and especially to encourage them to use alternative transportation and ride by bus or bicycle.

Professional artists who created the new bike rack art and bus shelter murals include: L.T Mustardseed, Douglas Lochner, Tyson Cline, John Suttman, Petrina Sharp, Caroline Allen, Mary Holmes, Laurel Huggins, Shirin Anderson, Susan Seaberry and MB Hanrahan as well as a group project by Cabrillo Middle School headed by teacher Teri Willison and created by the following students: Joel Mayorga, Emily Schoutan, Jordan Ferguson, Lexi Woodward, Christina Schaefer, Marin McGee, Bella Bobrow and Lauren Whitley

Ventura’s Public Art Program was enacted in 1991 and since then has incorporated an artist’s vision to capital improvement projects providing visitors and residents alike with a new understanding of urban design in Ventura.
