Dawn Reily speaks with Our Ventura TV host, Sandra Siepak, about the Humane Society of Ventura County. Reily is accompanied by a black Maine Coon cat named Licky.
The mission of The Humane Society of Ventura County is to promote the health, safety, welfare, compassionate care and protection of all animals through education and community outreach programs.
Reily’s role is to educate people on animals, including how to take care of them and to recognize signs of animal abuse in the community. She talks about their free education programs, which includes bringing lectures to audiences at their own venues and also touches upon the benefits to seniors, and all people, who care for pets.
She discusses the five things that animals need to be healthy and happy.
She also speaks about their pet spay and neuter program including free spay and neutering for certain dogs.
Reily discusses some of the challenges and issues regarding animal welfare, including abuse, such as rooster fighting (also known as cock fighting); trying to make pets out of wildlife, which is illegal; and even releasing domesticated pets into the wild, which results in a high percentage of mortality for the animals.
Reily discusses guidelines for adopting an animal and buying an animal from a pet store.
Located in Ojai, CA, the Humane Society of Ventura County is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1932. They receive no direct financial assistance from city, county, state agencies or National Animal Welfare Organizations such as The Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Fundraising events, grants, bequests, investments, supporters and individual donations are their only sources of income.
They truly appreciate the love, concern and support for their Shelter animals and the community outreach services the Humane Society provides. Approximately 95 percent of the contributions they receive are spent on programs and services that directly benefit animals.
When animals need a safe haven, the Humane Society of Ventura County is there for them.
