Ventura County Sheriff, Geoff Dean, speaks with Our Ventura TV host, Bart Stern, about how prescription narcotics abuse is influencing heroin overdose deaths, especially among young people.
Sheriff Dean credits Assistant Sheriff, Gary Pentis, for discovering the correlation between young people getting involved with and then developing habits of using prescription pills, such as Vicodin, Oxycontin, etc., who then find they can use heroin for a lower cost and some of these kids then die from heroin overdoses.
A small percentage of doctors and pharmacies have been over-subscribing prescriptions that have been going out on the streets in large quantities, which gets introduced to kids. The kids have also been getting the pills from their parents medicine cabinets.
