Boxing referees have to make instant decisions on what they see in the ring, right or wrong. Their job is to maintain control over the fighters and justly enforce the rules to ensure a fair contest, while ensuring the safety of the fighters.
Jack Reiss is a professional boxing and mixed martial arts referee, working nationally and internationally on world title fights. In this interview with Our Ventura TV host, Lyn Fairly, Reiss discusses his job and background as well as some of his experiences in the world of professional boxing.
Reiss also comments on the skill levels between male and female boxers.
The role of a boxing referee includes giving instructions to both boxers before the fight, determining when to start or stop a count when a fighter is down and deciding when a foul necessitates a warning or that points will be taken away. The referee also signals when the round is over, determines when a fighter’s health will be endangered by more blows and thus, stops the fight.
Jack Reiss retired after 31 years with the Los Angeles Fire Department and held a rank of Captain.
