Founded 27 years ago as a visual arts collective at California State University Channel Islands, the organization has expanded into an all-encompassing creative hub featuring visual arts, music, literature, film, and educational programs.
Expanding Beyond the Gallery: Over recent years, Studio Channel Islands has moved beyond traditional gallery exhibitions into public art commissions, residency programs, and community-driven projects in unique public spaces across Ventura County.
The Moon Ditch Mural Project: A flagship project in partnership with Ventura County Public Works transformed a drainage ditch with a graffiti problem into a vibrant, mile-long mural. The initiative aimed to combat blight, support mental health, promote environmental stewardship, and build local community connection.
Community & Student Collaboration: The project engaged local artists alongside studio art and mural students from CSU Channel Islands, Ventura College, and Oxnard College, as well as youth groups like the Boys & Girls Clubs. More than 300 community members participated in community paint days.
Vision for Future Public Art: Tyus highlights the power of grassroots, community-led art over imposed commercial designs. He emphasizes how collaborative public art creates community cohesion, bridges social divides, and leverages upcoming regional events (such as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and public transit initiatives) to inspire shared civic pride.
