Domonique Gray and Jon Youngerman speak with Sandra Siepak about the Ventura Downtown Lions Club.
From a broad perspective, Lions Clubs International is a non-political service organization established in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones. It is comprised of tens of thousands of clubs in more than 200 countries with over a million and a half members.
The Lions motto is “We Serve”. Local Lions Club programs include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and many other programs. The discussion of politics and religion is forbidden. The LIONS acronym also stands for Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations’ Safety.
The Ventura Downtown Lions Club, originally called the Lions Club of Ventura, was chartered on April 27, 1923 by Fred W. Smith (president 1933-34) who went on to become President of the International Association of Lions clubs in 1947-48, and Erle Stanley Gardner, famous attorney, writer, and “father” of Perry Mason (protagonist of many murder mystery books and a popular television series).
