John Nunes, the new president of California Lutheran University, speaks with George Alger about CLU as a 65-year-old institution in Thousand Oaks that serves 3,500 students and focuses on academics, athletics, and the arts.
Nunes believes higher education is valuable, noting that 96% of CLU graduates are employed in a career within nine months of graduation.
The discussion also covers how the university helps students navigate a polarized society by teaching “principled difference” with civility and respect. He gives an example of a teaching method where two experts with opposing views debate a topic, then switch sides to demonstrate understanding of another’s viewpoint.
Nunes’s vision for the university is to build on its liberal arts foundation with degrees that lead to jobs, all while being grounded in a faith-based approach that respects all people.
