How to Prevent and Control Household Mold

Ramiro Moreno speaks with George Alger about the causes, dangers, and prevention of household mold.

What Mold Is and How It Grows

Mold is a fungus that thrives in humid, wet environments, particularly when humidity levels exceed 50%. It commonly grows in areas where moisture interacts with organic matter, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and window sills.

Health Dangers

While mold itself may not be directly fatal, it exacerbates existing health conditions—especially respiratory issues like asthma and lung problems.

Common Problem Areas

Bathrooms, kitchens (due to heat and organic food particles), window sills, and showers are primary hotspots for mold growth, including black mold.

Prevention & Removal:

  • Control Humidity: Maintain indoor humidity levels between 30% and 40% (or under 50%) to prevent mold from activating.
  • Proper Ventilation: Use exhaust fans in bathrooms, open doors, and allow adequate airflow when cooking or showering.
  • Keep Surfaces Dry: Immediately wipe down wet surfaces after showers or rain leaks.
  • Cleaning: Traditional remedies like bleach can be used to clean visible mold, but prevention by eliminating excess moisture and debris remains the best defense.
