Lisa Safaeinili speaks with Paulette Mahurin about Westminster Free Clinic in Ventura County. Safaeinili is the Executive Director of Westminster Free Clinic, which offers basic, non-invasive health care to serve the working poor of Ventura County. Physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other medical professionals volunteer their time at the clinic after their regular jobs. Community volunteers and teens also assist with the program. A limited number of paid staff provides a necessary infrastructure and consistency.

The clinic addresses a broad spectrum of public health and health care issues. This program includes free patient care, prescriptions, resource and referral, advocacy, free legal services, bilingual counseling and dental screening services as well as training opportunities for teens and college students

The free clinic operates off a principle of having next generation be part of the solution. High school students are mentored, side-by-side, with volunteer professionals.

Many dozens of student volunteers set up the clinic, take the patients through the process and take down the clinic at the end of the day.

In addition to free service and free medicine, the clinic also provides food and clothing, as well as classes on diet and prevention of disease.
