Braille Institute Remote Services

Gina Cosio speaks with George Alger about the Santa Barbara Braille Institute’s remote services.

The Braille Institute is a non-profit organization that provides all its services to clients and students free of charge, thanks to generous donors.

The remote services expanded significantly during the pandemic and are now accessible to clients not only across the USA but internationally.

Classes and workshops are offered remotely and include sessions that are typically 30 to 40 minutes, covering specialized information on topics such as glaucoma, health, and nutrition to help individuals manage their vision and daily lives.

Low Vision occupational therapy pairs individuals with a low vision occupational therapist who helps them find and use different devices, such as magnifiers and other specialty equipment, to regain independence in everyday activities, including cooking.

New clients are connected with an instructor who helps them to participate remotely.

While some students are fully without vision, many have some residual vision, and the institute helps them enhance their remaining sight using different technology and specialized equipment.
