Chiropractic Non-Drug Pain Management

Dr. Laila Nayab-Murshidi speaks with George Alger about chiropractic non-drug pain management.

Dr. Laila defines non-drug pain management as any treatment that allows the body to heal itself without the introduction of a pill, which often only reduces symptoms rather than correcting the underlying problem.

Examples include acupuncture, chiropractic care, and exercise therapy.

Chiropractic and Realistic Expectations

The core of chiropractic care is addressing a vertebral subluxation, which is a misaligned spinal bone. This misalignment narrows the space the nerve passes through, causing the connected organ, cell, tissue, or joint to dysfunction. Pain often indicates the problem is already “well advanced.”

Chiropractors mobilize the misaligned spinal bone to reduce pressure on the nerve, allowing for better nerve communication and often providing instant relief, though chronic issues take longer to resolve.

Dr. Laila also teaches patients self-sufficiency through at-home exercises, foam roller use, and applying heat or ice.

Beyond Bone Pain: A Holistic Approach

Chiropractic care is presented as a holistic approach, not just for bones. Spinal misalignments can cause issues seemingly unrelated to the spine, such as digestive issues and headaches.

By mobilizing the specific spinal segments that correlate with the head or digestive organs, the nerve pressure is relieved, allowing those systems to function better. Patients have reported improvement in indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux.

Chiropractors also look at nutrition, suggesting supplements like hydrochloric acid enzymes and probiotics to enhance digestive function.

Chiropractic can work in conjunction with traditional medicine, helping patients, such as those with rheumatoid arthritis, reduce their pain and lessen their reliance on harsh medications.

Self-Care Tip: Motion is Lotion

The doctor’s main tip for self-care is to move. “Motion is lotion” is the key message because movement promotes blood circulation, which she calls “food for your cells,” or nourishment and healing.

Lack of motion leads to restricted blood flow, causing areas to atrophy and degenerate. Introducing movement allows blood flow to reach those areas to help them thrive and function.

Final Message

Dr. Laila advises viewers not to simply accept a medical diagnosis or label, as diagnoses can sometimes be incorrect. She encourages viewers to explore other options and not accept that they must live with the symptoms that accompany a diagnosis.
